What Are Stones?
Stone is a naturally occurring hard and solid material obtained from rocks. It has been used as a building material since ancient times because of its strength, durability, availability, and attractive appearance. In civil engineering, stones are selected according to their physical, mechanical, and aesthetic properties and the requirements of the construction work.
Building stones are commonly obtained by quarrying natural rock formations. They may be cut, dressed, polished, or shaped into blocks, slabs, tiles, and other forms according to their intended application.
Types of Stones Used for Building Construction
Different types of natural stones are used in construction and architectural works. Their suitability depends on factors such as strength, hardness, durability, workability, weather resistance, appearance, availability, and cost.

1. Granite
Granite is a hard and durable intrusive igneous rock. It has high compressive strength and excellent
resistance to weathering and abrasion. It is widely used for flooring, wall cladding, staircases,
countertops, paving, building facades, and decorative works.
Advantages: High strength, hardness, durability, weather resistance, attractive appearance, and
good abrasion resistance.
Disadvantages: Relatively expensive, heavy, difficult to cut and shape, and requires specialized
equipment for installation and finishing.
Applications: Kitchen countertops, flooring, paving, kerbs, stairs, wall cladding, building facades,
monuments, and decorative works.
2. Marble
Marble is a metamorphic rock formed mainly from limestone under heat and pressure. It is valued for
its smooth texture, attractive colours, and ability to take a high polish.
Advantages: Attractive appearance, good durability, excellent polish, and availability in various colours
and patterns.
Disadvantages: Relatively expensive, susceptible to staining and scratching, and can be affected by
certain acidic substances.
Applications: Flooring, wall cladding, staircases, countertops, decorative elements, monuments,
and architectural finishes.
3. Laterite
Laterite is a highly weathered soil-like rock rich in iron and aluminium minerals. It is commonly available
in tropical regions and can often be easily cut into blocks when freshly quarried.
Advantages: Easily available in some regions, relatively easy to cut, lightweight compared with many
dense stones, and suitable for masonry when properly selected and protected.
Disadvantages: Generally has lower strength and durability than granite and some other building stones. Its performance can also vary considerably depending on its composition and weathering condition.
Applications: Wall construction, masonry, foundations for suitable low-rise structures, boundary walls, and traditional buildings.
4. Quartzite
Quartzite is a hard metamorphic rock formed from sandstone under heat and pressure. It contains a
high proportion of quartz and is known for its hardness, strength, and resistance to weathering.
Advantages: High hardness, good strength, excellent durability, abrasion resistance, and attractive
natural appearance.
Disadvantages: Difficult to cut and shape because of its high hardness and may require specialized tools.
Applications: Flooring, paving, wall cladding, roofing, steps, and decorative construction.
5. Alabaster
Alabaster is a relatively soft and fine-grained stone that is mainly used for decorative and ornamental purposes rather than heavy structural construction.
Advantages: Attractive appearance, smooth texture, translucency in some varieties, and easy workability.
Disadvantages: Relatively soft, easily scratched, and less resistant to weathering and moisture than harder building stones.
Applications: Decorative panels, sculptures, ornamental objects, interior finishes, and architectural details.
6. Basalt
Basalt is a dense, fine-grained extrusive igneous rock formed from rapidly cooled volcanic lava. It is
generally hard, strong, and durable.
Advantages: High strength, good hardness, excellent durability, abrasion resistance, and good
resistance to weathering.
Disadvantages: Difficult to dress and shape, relatively heavy, and its dark colour may not be preferred
for all architectural applications.
Applications: Road construction, aggregates, foundations, masonry, paving, kerbs, railway works, and other heavy construction applications.
7. Limestone
Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed mainly of calcium carbonate. It is available in a wide
range of colours and textures and is relatively easy to cut and work.
Advantages: Good workability, attractive appearance, availability in many regions, and suitability
for various construction applications.
Disadvantages: Some varieties have relatively low resistance to weathering and acids. Limestone can deteriorate in aggressive environments.
Applications: Building blocks, wall construction, flooring, cladding, paving, architectural works, and cement manufacture.
8. Sandstone
Sandstone is a sedimentary rock composed mainly of compacted and cemented sand-sized mineral
particles. Its properties depend on the type of cementing material and mineral composition.

suitable for architectural applications.
Disadvantages: Some varieties may have relatively high porosity and water absorption and may deteriorate under severe weathering conditions.

9. Travertine

10. Slate
Slate is a fine-grained metamorphic rock with a characteristic ability to split into thin, relatively flat sheets.

Disadvantages: Can split or break along its natural cleavage planes, and quality varies according to
geological origin.

11. Onyx
Onyx is a decorative stone valued primarily for its distinctive colours, patterns, and, in many varieties,
its ability to transmit light.

value.
Disadvantages: Generally more expensive than common building stones and may be relatively
vulnerable to scratching, staining, and damage if not properly maintained.
Applications: Interior wall panels, countertops, reception areas, decorative features, furniture surfaces, and luxury architectural finishes.

The selection of a building stone should always be based on the purpose of construction, required strength, durability, weather resistance, workability, appearance, availability, and cost.
